Volunteer work in the age of COVID-19 has been challenging, to say the least. I did, however, volunteer through Force For Good to help as a Program Manager and Client Lead to create new technology for the web page and offerings for the Ohio Humanities Council, which was designed to provide real-time feedback relative to their web-based and podcast based offerings.
I’m a former Volunteer Coordinator for EF High School Exchange Year, a non-profit organization that places and supports foreign high schoolers in experiencing an “Exchange Year” in the United States, and have hosted students as well.
In the past, I was also a “Big” with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program in Ohio. My “Little” brother and I spent time together enjoying the movies, arcade, laser tag, or just lunch and a walk through the mall. I have also volunteered to help our youth by volunteering for Kaleidoscope Youth Center in downtown Columbus, or with the Central Ohio Red Cross in the Disaster Services Division.
I have also participated in various build events for Habitat for Humanity. Working with my hands, and offering a hand up “pay it forward” opportunity for someone else is a truly rewarding experience.
I was also a very active volunteer with the Washington Township Fire Department. Having been a volunteer firefighter earlier in life, I joined Washington Township a few months after moving into the jurisdiction. I was fortunate to meet some very wonderful people, both residents, as well as other volunteers that I worked with. When our Station’s Lieutenant retired, I was approached by the Deputy Chief, and asked (and accepted) to take a promotion and run Nighttime Station Operations, which included Coaching, Training, Scheduling, Discipline, and Mentoring of the other Firefighters. Not only did this provide an opportunity for me to give back to my community, but it also afforded me the ability to test my people management skills on a very different work force. In fact, you will see an attestation to this from Mr. Paul Loughnane in the Letters of Reference section of this document.
I have served on several non-profit boards, in various capacities. Most recently, I served on the board of the Dayton Area Mensa (DAM), as Board Member and Acting Treasurer. Former board positions include Board Member of the Dayton LGBT Center, a non-profit supporting the Dayton LGBT community, and on the Board of Trustees for the Dayton Playhouse, a local community theater. On the DPH board, I served as Chairman of the Board, overseeing all non-profit activities and volunteers. This was during a crucial time in which the organization was losing critical funding from the City of Dayton, and needed solid leadership in light of the changes occurring.
